Burn Application Procedure
Steps to have The Burn Brigade PBA burn your property.
1. Become a Member
Join The Burn Brigade Prescribed Burn Association. Membership gives you access to experienced prescribed fire practitioners, educational opportunities, volunteer burn crews, and eligibility to apply for assistance with burns. Become a member here.Â
2. Develop a Prescribed Burn Plan
Every burn should begin with a written burn plan. The plan identifies your management objectives, burn unit boundaries, weather parameters, ignition methods, smoke management, safety procedures, contingency plans, and maps. If you do not have a burn plan, The Burn Brigade can help connect you with qualified professionals or discuss options for developing one. A written burn plan is recommended by the Illinois EPA and is a critical component of safe prescribed fire.
3. Obtain an Illinois EPA Open Burning Permit
Prairie and ecological landscape burns in Illinois require an Illinois EPA Open Burning Permit. Permit applications should be submitted well in advance of your planned burn, as processing may take up to 90 days. Be sure to check for any additional county, municipal, or fire protection district requirements that may apply in your area.
4. Submit a Burn Request to The Burn Brigade PBA
Once you have a burn plan and the necessary permits, submit a burn request through The Burn Brigade. Our Burn Implemintation Committee will review your request, evaluate staffing and equipment needs, and work with you to identify suitable weather conditions and schedule your burn.
